President’s Message

Increasing Value for Members, Volunteers & Sponsors

Susan Karnstedt

Susan Karnstedt
President, SV-IABC

While it’s early in the year, I want to take this opportunity to highlight some of SV-IABC’s ’07 wins.

For starters, IABC National recognized our chapter with a 2007 Chapter Management Merit Award at the Leadership Institute held in San Diego. Many thanks to Past President Ron Schmidt who spearheaded our chapter entry. I encourage you all to read more from Ron on this special acknowledgement.

The February 8 panel discussion at HP featured blogging experts Alison Watterson HP.com’s Editor-in-Chief and Jeanette Gibson from Cisco’s New Media group. The engaging interchange provided insight into the future of this cutting edge technology and the implications for our field.

Attendee feedback from the January 11 event at eBay was excellent. Not only did we receive some terrific recommendations, but early indications from our survey suggest that it was our best event EVER.

But that’s not all. Thanks to the efforts of John Robertson in the newly created role of VP of Partnership and Sponsorships, our January event was sponsored by ROI Communications, which helped to significantly subsidize member registration fees. And in the spirit of SV-IABC’s newly created partnership with PRSA, we are in the process of planning our first joint event.

Currently, the board is in the process of finalizing chapter goals and objectives for ’07 so if you’ve been thinking of joining, now is a great time; the membership application fee will be waived for new members joining and lapsed members re-joining in February. If you’re already a member and would like to get more involved, please contact Yvonne Thomson to find out more about volunteer opportunities.

I would like to sincerely thank board members, volunteers and sponsors for contributing to our many major accomplishments. It’s been said that one way to keep momentum going is to constantly set higher goals. Achieving these greater goals will be our continued challenge. But with momentum behind us, I am confident that - working together as a unified team - there is nothing that can stop us from taking SV-IABC to the next level.

March 8 Save the dateNaked Conversations:  Robert Scoble Shares His Experiences with Blogging,  Podcasting & Video-podcasting

Join your colleagues on Thursday, March 8 at NetApp’s Executive Briefing Center for an evening with video podcaster and blogger Robert Scoble.

Scoble will talk about his experience as a company blogger for Microsoft, the new world of video-podcasting and how the Web’s new social media are engendering an intense two-way dialogue between content creators and their audience.

And, fresh off the campaign plane of presidential candidate John Edwards, he’ll likely talk about the coming impact of podcasters and bloggers on the upcoming presidential election.

Scoble, according Wikipedia, is a technical “evangelist, author, and host of the “Scoble Show,” a video-podcast on Podtech.net, a Palo Alto company. The show takes a “plain English” look at a wide variety of cutting-edge technology issues and products.

Scoble first rose to prominence a few years ago as the author of his blog, the “Scobleizer,” which he wrote while he was employed as a technical evangelist at Microsoft.

According to The Economist, Scoble, “succeeded where small armies of more conventional public-relations types have been failing abjectly for years:  he has made Microsoft, with its history of monopolistic bullying, appear marginally but noticeably less evil to the outside world.”

He is also the co-author (with Shel Israel) of Naked Conversations: How Blogs are Changing the Way Businesses Talk with Customers.

Silicon Valley Chapter Wins 2007 IABC Chapter Management Award
By Ron Schmidt

SV-IABC is pleased to announce that our chapter received a 2007 Chapter Management Merit Award in Leadership Development from IABC National. Phillip Davis, VP of Programs, and I attended IABC's 2007 Leadership Institute in San Diego last month and accepted the award at a ceremony during the conference.

The Chapter Management Awards recognize the leadership abilities, management skills, creativity and teamwork of outstanding volunteer chapter leaders worldwide. Awards were given in six categories: Membership Marketing, Professional Development, Financial Management, Leadership Development, Communication and Community and Educational Involvement.

The Leadership Development award is given to a chapter that applies best practices investing in the development of their volunteers and ensuring the long-term health of their chapter and IABC as a whole. Our chapter's 2006 board spent considerable time identifying challenges in these areas and updating processes to better serve the needs of our membership and remain viable in the future. For example, the changes we made included:

  • Expanding the number of board positions from 9 to 12 based upon the chapter's strategic area of focus (added VP of Volunteers, VP of Sponsorship and split VP Community/Education into two positions)
  • Recruiting two student directors for 2007 to work with the VP of Education
  • Retaining half of the board members for 2007
  • Updating the chapter website to include detailed content on volunteer positions
  • Streamlining procedure for board member goals and chapter planning
  • Increasing our membership by 8 percent in 2006 (149 to 161 members)

Under Susan Karnstedt's leadership this year, we will continue our efforts to further broaden our offerings to meet the diverse needs of chapter members and invest in the future of our chapter.
